Quality Vegetables from a small Garden/Allotment

Over the winter months the National Vegetable Society(NVS) has run a number of excellent zoom talks which were recorded and are presently available for members of the NVS on their website.

The latest talk was entitled “Growing Quality Veg on a Tiny Plot” an excellent talk by a member who has won red cards at several shows including the NVS National Show at Harrogate.

The talk is split into a number of sections which I will try to paraphrase below:   It is in the articles section.

New Classes in Annual Show

Annual Produce and Flower Show - 9th Sept

Only 5 weeks to go until our show and I hope you are all getting an idea of what to pout in the different classes.

Two new exciting classes that should interest floral art exhibitors.  Section 4 Floral Arrangement Class 69 and Section 6 Children’s Class 87.  These two classes call for:  A Flower Palette. Seven blooms, no more than two blooms of any one cultivar, no foliage. Staged on a palette provided by the NLHS.

The full Show Schedule can be downloaded here or a copy can be obtained from the Store.  https://www.northlincolnhorticulturalsociety.co.uk/annual-show

I look forward to seeing plenty of exhibits in these classes.

Autumn Onion ,Shallot, Garlic and Broad Bean Order

Each year our Society provide us with onions, shallots, garlic and Broad Beans, and Kings Seeds at substantially reduced prices.

This year’s selection of winter onions sets and shallots include ‘Senshyu’ an easy to grow yellow semi-globe onion with a superb taste and Autumn Winter; along with ‘Blood Red’ onions which have rich crimson outer skins and round generous bulbs.  These onions can be eaten raw or roasted but are also versatile enough that they can be picked early as a salad onion.
The onions come in a weight of 250grams which is equivalent to approximately 60 individual sets at a cost of £1.00

Our selection of shallot is ‘Red Sun.’  It is arguably the best of all red shallots. Producing good yields of crisp, white fleshed bulbs of excellent flavour for cooking, salads or for pickling. Bulbs have long storage potential.  The shallots come in a weight of 500grams equivalent to around 12 individual sets at a cost of £1.80.

Those wishing to take advantage of this offer on onions and shallots should complete the attached form and return to either the Store or on-line to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  Closing date for orders is 29th July.
